Each month, the Reinvented team votes on a Member of the Month based on factors including dedication to the team, team spirit, and contributions to Reinvented. We are beyond proud to call Kaitlyn one of our volunteers and are thrilled to recognize her as our December Member of the Month!
Kaitlyn Davey | Website Director
Education: I attended the University of Maryland College Park where I earned my B.S. in Food Science in May 2020.
Career: I am a food scientist working at McCormick and Company in the Materials and Process Technology group.
How did you get involved in STEM?
I got involved in STEM at a young age through the Baltimore Museum of Industry Engineering Challenges. Throughout my middle and high school years, I competed in FIRST Lego League, SeaPerch, Vex Robotics, and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). I learned so many soft and hard skills through these programs, but in FTC on team Cubix^3 is where I was able to fine-tune my technical and project management abilities. When I started college I combined my love of chemistry and problem solving with robotics to major in Food Science!
Why did you join Reinvented Magazine?
During my younger years, I often was one of few girls in the room at STEM events and was rarely able to find female peers interested in STEM like I was. I was fortunate to have support through these times and Joined Reinvented because I want other girls to see that being in STEM is the norm! I learned about Reinvented through my FTC connections and am eager to continue sharing the magazine through that community because I know how important it is to see people like you as role models.
Who is your favorite female STEM role model?
My favorite STEM role model is Doris Davis Centini, an early Food Scientist who designed Stouffer’s freezing and freeze-drying methods which were used to support the Apollo 11 mission!
Do you have any hobbies outside of Reinvented?
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, singing, juggling, unicycling, and other circus arts. I also mentor 4-Hers in the poultry judging program and am a Head Referee for Maryland FTC.
